Bioservo AB, a worldwide leader in wearable muscle-strengthening systems, has reached an important milestone in the United States: 100 U.S. military veterans have now been fitted with Carbonhand® through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) healthcare system. Carbonhand is an assistive device that provides extra strength and endurance, offering a life-changing difference for individuals living with hand weakness.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is a federal government department responsible for providing healthcare and other benefits to former members of the U.S. Armed Forces. Its healthcare organisation, the Veterans Health Administration, is the largest integrated healthcare system in the United States, providing care to more than nine million enrolled veterans through a nationwide network of medical centres and outpatient clinics.
Carbonhand is an assistive device designed for people with reduced hand strength. The additional strength and endurance can help people perform everyday activities that would otherwise be difficult or impossible. Carbonhand can support people with impaired hand function resulting from conditions including spinal cord injury (SCI), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS/MND), multiple sclerosis (MS), stroke, brachial plexus injuries, nerve injuries and other neurological, rheumatic or orthopaedic conditions.
Real-World Impact: 100 Veterans Served and Counting
Introduced in the U.S. market in 2024, Carbonhand is now available to eligible veterans through VA Medical Centers across the country. Bioservo estimates that approximately 2,5 million Americans can benefit from Carbonhand, including 250,000 veterans within the VA healthcare system, as it grows its distribution and service.
Reaching 100 veterans served reflects the success and sustained daily use by patients across the country. For example, Bioservo patient Terry Knight, a U.S. Army veteran based in Western Washington, struggled with mobility in his right hand until he began using the Carbonhand. The device has since allowed him to return to daily tasks.
"Before, if I was going to grab a bottle, I'd have to help push it into my hand and then put my finger under it. Now, I'm back to using one hand," said Knight. "So, with the Carbonhand I have freedom, self-reliance again, and the ability to do things I haven't been able to do in a long time. Being able to have something that gives back some of your function is priceless."
Growing Adoption Across the U.S.
Carbonhand is now being prescribed by clinicians at more than 40 VA Medical Centers across the United States, including facilities in states such as California, Texas, Florida and Virginia, and Washington, D.C.
The Veterans Health Administration operates approximately 170 VA Medical Centers and more than 1000 outpatient sites serving more than nine million enrolled veterans.
“Our mission is to empower individuals with impaired hand function to live more independent, confident, and self-sufficient lives," said Petter Bäckgren, CEO of Bioservo. “That we’ve done that for so many veterans, with thousands more to serve, is a testament to the technology and humans behind it. We’re grateful for our partnership with VA and look forward to the day when every veteran in America who needs a Carbonhand has one.”
